The Galapagos Islands make up an archipelago that is part of Ecuador. The islands were made famous by Charles Darwin's studies there that led to his theory of evolution by natural selection. After the publication of Darwin's Origin of the Species, 97.5% of the archipelago's land area was declared a national park. Since then, the islands have become a popular destination for cruisers curious about the unique wildlife. The Galapagos Islands are home to a number of animal species, including the Galapagos tortoise, sea lions, the Blue-footed Booby, the Marine iguana, the Galapagos Penguin and Darwin's finches. Cruises to the Galapagos Islands allow ample opportunity to meet this wildlife up close.
